How to get into the radio industry

Radio is a very popular career choice and therefore it's extremely competitive. Many people who now work in radio began their careers in hospital or college radio, or helping at their local radio station on a voluntary or freelance basis. It's always useful to cultivate contacts with your local radio station.

Many colleges now offer Media Studies courses but please don't make the mistake of believing that these will qualify you for a job in radio. Experience is far more important. If you want to do a college course or degree, make sure you get hands-on experience at a campus radio station during your course.

For advice on any of the careers below, you can visit the BBC jobs website at www.bbc.co.uk/jobs or for the commercial sector, you can write to: The Commercial Radio Companies Association, 77 Shaftesbury Avenue, London W1V 7AD. They can help with leaflets, lists of college courses and suggested reading. Please specify the career or careers that particularly interest you when you write to them.
