How to get into...

SALES
A crucial part of any commercial radio station is the Sales Team. Commercial radio is funded solely by the sale of advertising and promotional opportunities, and Sales Executives work with local companies to sell them advertising and sponsorship ideas.

PROMOTIONS
Some stations also have a Promotions Department which deals with everything from outside broadcasts and roadshows to competitions and charity fundraising. For this, you need to have a flair for big things - making great events, competitions and fun. And you also need to be able to get people interested - both the local press and the listeners!

COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION
Some radio stations employ a Commercial Production team to make adverts. You will need proven experience in either radio production or copy writing.

ENGINEERING
Some radio stations employ a full-time engineer who is responsible for studio upkeep, although many stations now contract the work out to a freelance engineer. The BBC have good engineering training courses.

ALSO
There are also many other posts at radio stations common to most companies, including receptionists and clerical staff, accounts, personnel, etc. Stations will advertise these locally, usually on-air, in job centres, or inside the staff newsletter like the BBC Ariel magazine.
